Africa Rising

Africa Rising: Grassroots activism against FGM

This event was organised in conjunction with Equality Now and FGM Aware, and was partly funded through the Memorial Award.

From the Horn of Africa to the Western shores of the sub-Saharan nations, every day 6,000 girls are subjected to a practice called female genital mutilation or FGM.

‘Africa Rising’ is a powerful documentary portraying the indomitable grassroots movement to end FGM.   Following the film screening, there was a panel discussion which included: Faiza Jama Mohamed, Director, Equality Now, Nairobi, Kenya; Hawa Mohamed, Founder and Exec Director of Galkayo Education Centre for Peace and Development; Jacqui Hunt, Director London Office, Equality Now and Khadija Coll, FGM Aware Glasgow.
