What sort of training do you need? This section looks at options
Information sessions
Organisations working on violence against women and related issues may be able to offer information sessions which can provide an opportunity for general discussion on the needs of service users and on service responses
Level 1 awareness training
Provides a general overview including definition, cause, extent, impact on survivors, helpful services and resources
When training is offered on a multi-agency basis, participants have the added opportunity to exchange views with colleagues from other services and this can result in improved liaison and joint working
Level 2 / Skills development
Aimed at people who have already undertaken level 1 awareness training, to develop practical skills in responding
Training to support organisational change and development
Focuses on improving the overall service response, often to introduce a change in practice. Discussion is likely to cover context, aim of service response, role of individual workers, care pathways, assessment, recording, child protection, support for staff, helpful services and resources
Core curriculum
Core curriculum elements for violence against women basic awareness training should include:
- Understanding gender, gender inequality and the cause of violence against women
- Understanding definitions of violence against women. (most one day courses will focus on a particular aspect of violence against women rather than the whole range)
- Knowledge of the extent of the problem. ( this is likely to focus on a particular aspect)
- Understanding the possible impacts of violence and abuse
- Knowledge of helpful approaches and initial responses
- Understanding of organisational role, and of individual responsibility in responding
- Knowledge of relevant services and resources
